What started 26 years ago as a way for two young friends, Kormákur (drummer) and Skjöldur (chef), to afford to take their girlfriends out for a grand dinner on New Years Eve has grown into the premier destination for all things menswear in Iceland. Guided by a shared passion for heritage menswear with a twist of the cold,dark nordic they, together with lead designer and partner Gunni Hilmarsson (All Saints, Bestseller, Day Birger et Mikkelsen, Dita Von Teese), have created a unique brand that focuses on quality, both in fabrics and fit. Gunni is on the board of the Nordic Fashion Association and founding member of the Global Fashion Agenda. The brand now has five retail stores in Iceland.
We at Kormákur & Skjöldur truly believe that it is our responsibility to create long lasting garments of great quality. To achieve that we only work with suppliers that we know and trust. We have worked with most of them for over 20 years and visit them regularly. By creating long lasting garments and only manufacturing a small amount of each item and often carry forward styles between seasons we minimize wastage and carbon footprint. Slow fashion is the responsible way forward.
For the first time in almost fifty years we now have high quality tweed fabric made from entirely Icelandic wool. For years Kormákur and Skjöldur have worked to establish the unique Icelandic Tweed brand and make the dream of reviving this historical fabric come true. The wool comes from all corners of Iceland. The wool band is spun locally in Iceland and then it is woven in one of the finest mills in Europe. The whole process is sustainable and all our partners in this project have certificates of the highest standard. What we love about our Tweed fabrics is that it´s true to the Tweed heritage and at the same time true to the Nordic values of quality and sustainability.
The Icelandic leader-sheep, or Forystufé, is a breed of sheep unique to Iceland, and has inhabited this island for over 1100 years. They are both taller and leaner than regular sheep, they can sense weather changes, lead the rest of the flock to safety and always know the way back home. There is one gentleman that collects wool from all the leader-sheep in Iceland and with that wool we create a special Forystufé tweed product line. We like to say that when you wear leader-sheep wool you will always find your way back home.
Kormákur & Skjöldur / Nordic Angan
K&S have their own fragrance product line, consisting of beard oils, perfume and room spray, created with Icelandic company Nordic Angan. The talented people at Nordic Angan have collected the essential oils of almost every plant you can find in Iceland and use it to create unique fragrances inspired by well known places in Iceland. Scent related storytelling is something that fascinates us and these products tie together perfectly with our clothing line.
